The Ice House reopens in Pasadena with laughs, lofty goals and Lakers magic

A half-dozen cabins are spread out along the bottom of the canyon, along with another half-dozen stone foundations (ruins left over from the early days of the Angeles). The trail passes these current and past dwellings, ascending gradually into a wilderness with less and less human impact. “I’m really excited about what this club’s gonna be,” he said. Finally, burnt out on sports and other ventures before the pandemic, Buss decided to revive the comedy club dream, buying the Ice House in 2019 from longtime owner Bob Fisher, who was retiring. The club sat in limbo until recently — during which time Buss' mother, JoAnn Mueller, also passed away, before the club reopened. But over the last several months, the club has finally finished its long-awaited reshaping and is ready to turn the lights back on.

Poncho sledding, as it could be called, adds even more enjoyment to this winter hike. If Icehouse Saddle is your final destination, it is worth the extra effort to hike up the ridge to the north a few hundred feet to get above the trees for a magnificent view of the range to the east and west. The combination of blue skies, white snow, and impressive peaks make for an exception outing. One mile from the start, comes a junction with the Chapman Trail, which turns north, passing through Cedar Grove Trail Camp on a more roundabout course to Icehouse Saddle. The Icehouse Canyon Trail continues straight ahead, eventually crossing over to the south side of the creek.

Sports

The Ice House has hosted an array of comedy royalty, from the quick wit of George Carlin to the eccentric genius of Robin Williams, the stage has seen it all. Comedy legends like David Letterman, Jim Carrey, and Jay Leno have left their mark, while the likes of Dennis Miller, Howie Mandel, and Jerry Seinfeld have brought tears of laughter to the eyes of eager spectators. With a commitment to fostering new talent in the booming $300 million comedy industry, the iconic venue has enlisted former Los Angeles Sparks point guard Penny Toler to manage the club. “But I don't know anything about a club, I’ve never managed a club,” she told Buss over the phone when he first offered her the job. In 1985, a passage was discovered beneath Ardgillan Castle in Co. Since she became the club’s general manager, Toler’s been regaled by every comic she meets about stories of the club from back in the day.

It's designed to let you take in the beauty of the Three Tee's Trail and then you have a nice long descent back to your car. If you want to avoid the more developed portions of the hike, simply hike to Telegraph Peak and return the way you came. The Three T's Trail hike is one of the more peaceful hikes in the Mt Baldy area. Ample parking options are available nearby, ensuring a hassle-free experience for visitors.

‘Rivers in the sky’ have drenched California, yet even more extreme rains are possible

Whether you prefer street parking or parking in a nearby lot, you’ll find accessible and convenient options just a short distance from the venue. Additionally, The Ice House Pasadena is committed to providing accessibility for all. The venue is wheelchair-friendly, with ramps and accessible seating available to accommodate individuals with mobility needs.

These tales keep motivating her to ensure that the club spends the necessary seven figures to upgrade itself without selling its soul in the process. “But I don’t know anything about a club, I’ve never managed a club,” she told Buss over the phone when he first offered her the job. Log in to keep track of trails that interest you with My Hikes and receive the "hike of the month" newsletter from hikespeak.com. Not long after crossing into the Cucamonga Wilderness, the trail begins to climb more seriously. Your heart starts to pound and your thighs start to burn… and then you hit the real steep section, an arduous march up a slippery slope called “the waterfall.” Have a look around for inspiration.

The Ice House Comedy Club reopens in Pasadena

Established in 1960 by the dynamic duo of Willard Chilcott and Bob Stane, The Ice House began as a folk music venue but quickly evolved into a hotbed of comedic talent. Today, it stands as a historic gem, having launched the careers of some of the biggest names in the industry. From the legendary Bob Newhart to the incomparable Robin Williams, this iconic venue has witnessed the magic of comedy unfold time and time again. Sparks in 2006 — a team he'd helped build into a winning franchise in the WNBA — Jerry's health had already started declining. After his father’s death, Buss said he didn’t want to think about opening a club anymore. He shifted away from sports, bought race cars and trucks and started getting into the business of off-road racing.

The National Park Service granted historic status late in 2000 by listing the property on the National Register of Historic Places. If you don't feel comfortable walking on the road, it's usually easy to hitchhike at the end of Manker Flats and get a lift from other hikers down to Icehouse. You need a parking pass for the Icehouse Canyon Trailhead lot.

Once again the building is outfitted with mics in the ceiling to capture the roar of one of L.A.’s loudest laughing crowds. It's a sound new owner Johnny Buss — the oldest son of the late Lakers owner Jerry Buss — has been waiting to hear since he bought the place in 2019. It’s a sound new owner Johnny Buss — the oldest son of the late Lakers owner Jerry Buss — has been waiting to hear since he bought the place in 2019. The Ice House Pasadena is widely recognized as one of the top comedy clubs in the country. It offers an intimate and cozy setting where audiences can enjoy top-notch comedy performances and indulge in laughter-filled evenings.

His father's notoriously outside-the-box methods of running a team made him a genius and impossible to predict. A regular at the Comedy Store, the Improv and the Laugh Factory, Johnny said he and his dad always talked about opening their own club together before Jerry’s death in 2013 at 80. It’s also a place where he dreams of discovering the next big star.

The Ice House, known as the oldest comedy club in the United States, features a brand-new inside that is completely renovated. Comedian Margaret Cho performed Thursday night, and legendary show host and comedian Arsenio Hall put on a set Friday night. Ice houses allowed a trade in ice that was a major part of the early economy of the New England region of the United States, which saw fortunes made by people who transported ice in straw-packed ships to the southern states and throughout the Caribbean Sea. Most notable was Frederic Tudor (known as Boston's "Ice King") who formed the Tudor Ice Company in the early 19th century. In winter months, ice was chipped from a lake surface and often dragged by sled to the ice house. In summer months, icemen delivered it to residences in ice-wagons; the ice would then be stored in an icebox, which was used much like a modern refrigerator.

It's also a hike best left for times when there's no snow or ice. Don't attempt it if you haven't done long mountain hikes and if you don't have a good level of fitness. Likewise, if there's snow and ice on the route, don't attempt it unless you have winter hiking and mountaineering experience. You can purchase them in advance through the club’s official website or by calling their box office. Online ticketing options are also available for your convenience.

Customer Satisfaction is Table

A professional web designer creates the look and feel of your website, collaborating with you to choose colors, creating logos and other branding materials, establishing page layouts, and creating sample pages. An important part of web design is making sure the site is functional, meets your goals, and is easy for users to navigate. How to get a free or cheap cruise ship cabin upgrade

the cheapest cruise

As the sailing date approaches, prices tend to increase as availability becomes limited. In addition to lower prices, traveling during the off-season may also offer other benefits. For example, you can enjoy smaller crowds both on the ship and at the ports of call. This means less waiting in line, more personalized service, and a more intimate experience overall. Known for its edgy design and upscale dining, Celebrity also has a number of budget friendly cruise options.

Carnival Conquest

You'll spend little time in your cabin, so it makes sense to pay less for the trip while you get your money's worth of food, entertainment and onboard amenities like the pool and nightclub. If you frequently cruise or plan to become a regular cruiser, joining loyalty programs offered by cruise lines can be a valuable strategy to secure the cheapest cruise deals. Loyalty programs are designed to reward repeat cruisers and offer various benefits and perks. By monitoring online travel websites regularly, you can stay updated on the latest deals and discounts, giving you a better chance of finding the cheapest cruise deals for your next vacation. Sign up for email alerts or newsletters from travel websites that specialize in cruise deals.

Whenever you book your cruise online through the cruise line’s website, there is typically a place to put in your loyalty number. This doesn’t mean you can’t find inexpensive cruises outside of these months. During these times there are no major holidays that lead to increased travel and they come after times like the winter holidays and summer school break so everyone is back to school and work. Instead, any number of sites like Orbitz or AvoyaTravel can search across every line, with the ability to narrow things down by destination, date, and number of nights. As well, you can sort by price to find the absolute lowest fares.

Answered: What’s the Cheapest Time to Take a Cruise?

If you don't have time for Twitter, online cruise research or gathering up a group of 20 friends, nothing beats a good travel agent to help you score deals on cruises. Of course, booking last-minute airfare might wipe out any savings. Plus, you'll have a limited selection of cabin locations and dinner seatings. But if you're flexible and can drive to a cruise port -- or have plenty of frequent flier airline points to burn -- it's a great way to take a cruise without breaking the bank. In addition, bundling multiple vacation elements together can help you save on individual costs. Luxury and river lines sometimes offer promotions that will include economy-class airfare, or a pre-cruise hotel stay at the price of your upscale cruise.

Check Prices And Call The Cruise Line If You See A Cheaper Fare After Booking

Keep in mind that each cruise line has its own threshold for groups. Some lines consider 10 guests (five cabins) to be a group, while others require 16 guests (eight cabins). For instance, book seven or more double-occupancy cabins on Norwegian Cruise Line, and for every 10 passengers booked, one passenger can cruise for free. Firstly, Royal Caribbean has a variety of ever-changing itineraries to choose from.

Must-Have Travel Accessories

An 11-night cruise aboard Anthem of the Seas leaves New York for England, at just $655. Well cruise lines aren’t offering you casino rates because they just want to be nice. If you’re paying $200 for a cabin, but dropping $1,000 in the casino, that’s not much different than paying $1,200 for the vacation.

Always Book Using Military, Senior or Residency Deals

Things like drinks, shore excursions, gratuities, spa treatments, specialty dining, airfare, photos, taxes and port fees aren’t included and can add up quickly. So follow these cruise tips for how to save money on a cruise by booking the most affordable cruise lines. You may even be able to sneak in an extra vacation this year with all your savings. You only unpack once, yet you wake up in a new country or island every morning.

This is especially true if you plan on spending most of your time at the ports or elsewhere on the ship. Keep in mind that loyalty programs are specific to each cruise line, so if you prefer to cruise with different companies, consider joining multiple loyalty programs. This way, you can reap the benefits across various cruise lines and enjoy the cheapest deals available. When browsing travel websites, make use of filtering options to narrow down your search. You can filter by destination, cruise line, price range, or travel dates to quickly find the cheapest options that match your preferences. By opting for a package deal, you can potentially save money compared to booking each component separately.

Popular vacation dates — like the holidays, spring break, summer vacation and week long cruises — sometimes see the highest prices (though you might get lucky with a seasonal sale). If you have the flexibility to travel during the shoulder season or off season, you’ll likely enjoy big savings on popular stateroom categories, like Balconies and even Suites. The first step to making sure you get the best deals is to join the cruise line’s email list.

The office isn’t open for public viewing, but the changing of the guard occurs every hour. The stomping march of the uniform-clad men can be heard all around the area. When you choose to apply (and are approved) for a new credit card through our site, we may receive compensation from our partners, and this may impact how or where these products appear. Please view our advertising policy and product review methodology for more information. Your chance of an upgrade might be based on luck, skill or both. The advice from successful bidders is to go up from the minimum, but how much is a personal choice.

Remember, finding the cheapest cruise deal is not just about the price, but also about the overall value and experience. Take your time to research and compare different cruise lines to ensure you’re getting the best deal for your budget and preferences. These are voyages when cruise lines move their ships from one destination to another, often resulting in lower prices for passengers. Repositioning cruises may have fewer ports of call, but they can offer a unique and cost-effective way to experience a cruise. Overall, choosing the off-season for your cruise can significantly reduce the cost of your trip. One of the most effective ways to get the cheapest cruise deals is to travel during the off-season.

Plan a Vacation to Ensenada, Mexico

3 day cruise from long beach to ensenada

The Caribbean-themed buffet was my favorite of all the buffet menu during this trip! Like I mentioned earlier, I was thoroughly impressed with the check-in process. There will be 3 lines - early, on-time and VIP or Faster to the Fun. We arrived at around 12 noon and there were hardly any people lined up.

We Make Vacation Planning Easy

The Navigator of the Seas offers a few options for food included with your ticket price as well as some premium offerings that cost extra. The buffet has a different theme every night, but as a visually impaired person I have trouble with buffets for obvious reasons. There is no braille or large print signage for the dishes, and the staff tending the area behind the food lines are of little help when it comes to identifying a dish.

Planning Your Day Onboard

They had a variety of burritos, tacos nachos salads and other grab and go type food which we found perfect for lunch. The main dining room offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner but at restricted hours. Information about the hours for food service in the dining room is available from your cabin steward. While there are no options for braille or large print menus the servers were good about reading the menu options to me.

Ports of Call

Finally, for a budget hotel, try the Royal Inn Motel Long Beach. You can also check HotelsCombined for the best Long Beach Hotel Rates. Onboard, you’ll also find the Mirage Piano Bar, Illusions Nightclub (18+), Shangri La Lounge, Dream Bar, Atrium Lobby Bar, Alchemy bar where they specialized in martinis and cocktails and have a casino. During our cruise, we had a bit of rain on day one and it was a tad chilly for the waterslides for us. You’ll also find lots of fun activities happening on the Lido Deck — we caught a hairy chest contest that was fun and funny to watch.

Departure Dates: Apr 2024 - Apr 2026

It's this last crop that makes Ensenada the gateway to Baja's wine route (Ruta del Vino), where labels little known outside of Mexico are produced, often in small batches. Winery tours and tastings are a quintessential Ensenada experience. It all makes for a pleasant visit, especially for foodies and oenophiles, who will appreciate the area's farm-to-table ethic and its many alfresco restaurants.

I found it easy to bump into things and risked knocking things off the shelves without a sighted guide. If you want to learn more about the island and it’s cool history with the film industry, I suggest taking a guided bus tour. You can either book ahead of time or when you get to the island, and locating the shops where you board your tour bus is easy because it is just off to the right as you exit the dock area before getting to the shops. There are a ton of other fun things to do on Catalina Island, if you would like more information check out our in-depth review below. For this trip, the boat we sailed on was the Royal Caribbean Navigator of the Seas, which offers many included food options and lots of entertainment offerings.

To enter the terminal, you’ll need to provide a boarding pass and a passport because it’s an international cruise. When you cruise out of Long Beach with Carnival, you’ll depart via the Long Beach Cruise Terminal, which is the busiest port in North America with ships docking five days a week. Furthermore, Cruise Critic makes no guarantees for availability of prices advertised on our site. Listed prices may have blackout dates, qualifications or restrictions.

A huge thank you to Carnival Cruise Line for their generous hospitality. We enjoyed this cruise as professional bloggers, but as always, all opinions are our own. We were really impressed by the comedy shows, musicians and the entertainers for the “Showtime” extravaganza shows in the Dynasty Lounge. There is also an adults-only (21 years+)  outdoor space on the Promenade level called Serenity with a large hot tub and lounge area with chaise recliners.

Below you’ll find some helpful tips for cruising and some of our favorite moments on our 3-Day Baja, Mexico cruise from long beach to Ensenada. My husband, son, and I sailed with Carnival for this 3 Day Baja Mexico cruise from Long Beach. It is a great long weekend vacation, especially for anyone within easy driving distance of Long Beach, California. Lowest pricing is based on our 3rd party pricing supplier and valid as of April 22nd, 2024. Hashtag your cruise photos #carnival and #ensenada— you may see them right here.

The elevators do announce the floor numbers, but they don’t tell you what amenities are on that floor, which is why I suggest making a cheat sheet to refer to until you get used to where everything is. Just like any hotel, the rooms are well marked but I always find myself counting and memorizing steps to each location on the ship. If you haven’t been on a cruise ship, the first thing you will be shocked by is how small the rooms are. I would consider them about half the size of a regular hotel room, even if you upsize to the junior suite level. We had a balcony and found it nice to sit outside when coming into port, as there is a table and a couple chairs right outside the door. The railing was high and there was no risk of falling unless you were careless.

Follow our social media and blog for the latest cruise and travel news, including our best vacation deals. If you love fish tacos, Ensenada (the dish's birthplace) is the place for you to be — try the spate of stalls near the pier where your cruise ship arrives. You can also enjoy food from all around Mexico, from more traditional varieties of tacos and burritos, to tangy ceviche made with locally caught fish.

There you can search by cruise line, ship, destination, departure date, and departure port. Expedia is an obvious first mention in a list of the best cruise booking sites, in part because it’s an absolute juggernaut (Expedia also owns Travelocity and Orbitz). Its cruise-booking interface is simple and straightforward, only requiring you to enter your preferred sailing destination and date range, as well as how many passengers you’ll be bringing along. Then Expedia does the heavy lifting for you, with comprehensive results that make it one of the best cruise search engines.

This can help you maintain or gain status on an airline or with a hotel brand you use regularly. Much like Orbitz, Travelocity is another online travel agency where you’re most likely to book a cruise only if you use the site for all of your other travel bookings. If you already book your flights, hotel rooms, and car rentals on Travelocity, it’s worth checking out their cruise deals. Comparatively, Expedia is one of the larger travel booking platforms out there. From vacation rentals to flights, rental cars to cruises, Expedia offers a little bit of it all. The site is easy to use, making it a top pick for those who want a hassle-free cruise-booking experience.

The Pros and Cons of Cruises

Covering an extensive range of destinations such as the Caribbean, Hawaii, Bahamas, Mexico, Alaska, Africa, Australia, and Europe, it caters to diverse travel preferences. When avid travelers aim to have an exceptional cruise vacation, their approach to selecting booking apps and travel sites involves careful research and consideration.

Plus, Marriott cardholders can earn an extra 2x points when they use that card for their purchase. While most cruises max out at 25,000 Bonvoy points earned, some luxury cruise lines offer up to 250,000 Marriott points. The downside is that online pricing is not "live." Therefore, you must speak with a travel planner to get the latest prices and book your cruise. These websites offer a user-friendly interface that allows you to explore a wide range of cruise options, including different cruise lines, destinations, itineraries, and cabin choices. You can use them to compare prices, read reviews, and access detailed information about each cruise, from onboard amenities to shore excursions. Cruise booking sites also often feature special deals, promotions, and discounts, making it easier for you to find the best value for your trip.

Some local initiatives protesting against cruise travel have also gathered momentum, so cruisers should be aware of these issues before setting foot ashore. Following the recent rise in popularity of the region as a cruising destination, the fjords season has extended, with trips available as early as April and as late as September. CheapCaribbean.com sometimes offers extra bonuses, like extra onboard spending credit. Cruise line websites only have cruises from that line, so you are limiting your options of prices, ships, dates, and itineraries. In other words, if you’re looking for the absolute best deal or the most flexible schedule, you aren’t likely to find it searching only one cruise line.

And that’s before you even decide on which website to use to book your cruise. If the ship docks in a secondary location and you have to travel to the big tourist destinations, I always book excursions through the cruise line. For instance, the day my family and I explored Rome, the ship docked in Civitavecchia, Italy, and we had to take a two-hour bus ride into the city. Cruisewatch is an online cruise comparison site monitoring more than 25,000 different cruise sailings to a wide range of destinations on the world’s best cruise lines.

Unfortunately, most cruise lines do not offer free cancellations or changes to take advantage of price drops after you book. Passengers can always negotiate with a booking site or cruise line, but they aren't obligated to refund the difference. Instead, they may offer you onboard credit, complimentary excursions or credit toward another cruise booking. Several cruise booking sites set themselves apart from the competition by offering additional benefits to encourage booking through them. Additionally, being able to book other parts of your trip — like flight and excursions — on the same site, or offering access to a travel agent, distinguishes some of the best cruise websites.

American Airlines AAdvantage members can earn airline miles when booking cruises at BookAACruises.com. All members earn one mile for every dollar they spend on cruise reservations, up to 10,000 miles. Some cruise specials offer up to 100,000 miles based on your selected cruise. Surprisingly, you’ll usually get a better deal when you book your cruise through an OTA (think Cruise.com, Expedia, or United Cruises). When you book through these types of sites you’ll get any deals that are being offered directly by the cruise line plus any extras offered by the OTA.
